Shopify Dude Answer

Why Does a Shopify Customer Activation Link Say Invalid Token?

Imported customers can become stuck with expired Shopify activation links and password-reset errors. Disable the legacy account, then send a fresh invitation.

An imported customer clicks a Shopify account invitation and lands on /account/invalid_token. Resending an old email does not help, and password reset can fail because the customer never completed activation.

The likely cause

This is primarily a legacy customer-account issue. Activation URLs are tokenized and can expire or become invalid. Imported customer passwords cannot be migrated into Shopify.

Confirmed Community fix

A confirmed Community workaround is to disable the affected legacy customer account and then send a new activation invitation. This resets the state enough for Shopify to generate a fresh token.

Fix one affected customer

  1. Go to Customers.
  2. Open the affected customer record.
  3. Use the customer actions menu to disable the account.
  4. After the status updates, send a new account invitation.
  5. Ask the customer to use only the newest invitation.

Confirm the account system

  1. Go to Settings > Customer accounts.
  2. Check whether the store uses current Customer accounts or Legacy customer accounts.

Current customer accounts use a passwordless six-digit verification code and do not use the same activation workflow.
