Shopify Dude Fix

Why Does an Active Shopify Product Return a 404 Page?

An Active Shopify product can still return 404 when it is unpublished from the Online Store, unavailable in the visitor’s market, or linked with the wrong handle.

A product is marked Active in Shopify admin, but its storefront URL returns a 404 page or says the product is unavailable. Active status alone does not guarantee publication to the Online Store or availability in the visitor’s market.

The likely cause

Shopify separates product status from sales-channel publication. An Active product can remain unavailable to the Online Store. It can also be excluded from a market or catalog, or linked through an outdated product handle.

Confirmed Community fix

Community answers repeatedly resolve Active-product 404s by opening the product’s sales-channel settings and enabling Online Store.

Check publishing settings

  1. Go to Products.
  2. Open the affected product.
  3. Confirm the status is Active.
  4. Open publishing or sales-channel settings.
  5. Confirm Online Store is selected.
  6. Check for a scheduled publication date and save.

Check the URL and handle

  • Use the product’s View action to get the current storefront URL.
  • Compare the current handle with the broken menu, ad, or external link.
  • Remove tracking parameters and test the clean URL.

Check Markets

  1. Go to Settings > Markets.
  2. Open the affected market.
  3. Review product and catalog availability.
  4. Retest using the same country or market context as the customer.
