Shopify Market-Driven Shipping Is Rolling Out: What Delivery Integrations Need to Change

Shopify is moving merchant-owned shipping configuration from delivery profiles into Markets. Here’s what changes, what stays put, and how to test integrations before the rollout reaches your stores.

Quick answer

Shopify began rolling out market-driven shipping on October 1, 2026. Merchant-owned shipping configuration is moving from delivery profiles into Markets, while app delivery profiles remain on the delivery profile API. If an integration reads or writes merchant shipping settings through delivery profiles, test and migrate that logic now; Shopify says all merchants will be on the new model by July 1, 2027.

What actually changed

This changes where Shopify stores merchant-owned shipping configuration. A merchant can attach shipping options to a Market and vary them using product and location conditions. Markets therefore become part of the shipping data model.

The important distinction is ownership. Merchant shipping configuration moves to the Markets API. App delivery profiles do not. Apps that provide their own rates can continue using app delivery profiles, and those rates can appear alongside merchant rates.

Practical implementation details

Inventory every place your integration touches delivery profiles. Separate operations that manage an app-owned profile from operations that inspect or modify merchant shipping setup. The first category largely stays where it is; the second needs migration planning.

Create a development store with the market-driven shipping feature preview enabled and test multiple markets, locations, product-specific rules, app-provided rates, and fallback behavior.

If code assumes that adding a product to an app delivery profile changes merchant configuration, revisit it. Under the new model, Shopify says app profiles can target all products and adding a product to an app profile no longer impacts merchant configuration.

Common misunderstanding

“Delivery profiles are going away.” They are not. Merchant-owned configuration is moving toward Markets, but app delivery profiles remain. Ask whose shipping configuration a call manages before deciding what to migrate.

How to test this

  1. Create a development store with market-driven shipping enabled.
  2. Reproduce at least two Markets with different shipping behavior.
  3. Confirm merchant rates are read and changed through the new model.
  4. Verify app-owned profile rates still appear correctly beside merchant rates.
  5. Test products across multiple locations and verify no eligible rate disappears.
  6. Repeat the checkout matrix against a store still using the older configuration during rollout.
