The real symptom
New orders immediately show Fulfilled even though nothing has been packed or shipped, and customers may receive shipping confirmations too early.
Likely causes
- Automatic fulfillment is enabled.
- A fulfillment app completes fulfillment orders.
- Digital downloads or gift cards auto-fulfill certain items.
- A shipping label action completed fulfillment.
- ERP, warehouse, or API integration updated the status.
- Shopify Flow or automation marked the order fulfilled.
- POS is configured to fulfill take-away orders.
Confirmed Community fix
An evergreen Community thread resolved this by disabling automatic fulfillment in order-processing settings. For app-managed cases, the order timeline usually identifies the app or service responsible.
Exact admin path
- Go to Settings → General.
- Scroll to Order processing.
- Review Automatically fulfill the order’s line items.
- Disable it for physical orders that should stay unfulfilled.
- Review whether customers are notified automatically.
- Open an affected order and inspect the timeline.
Simple checks
Check Settings → Apps and sales channels, Settings → Shipping and delivery, Shopify Flow, ERP integrations, and fulfillment services for automation that writes fulfillment status.
Do not do this
Do not revert every affected order without checking the timeline. If a warehouse already accepted fulfillment, Shopify status changes may not stop shipment.
